Automatic trains... properly scary when they decide to unexpectedly wake up from a peaceful slumber...

Paris Metro.

Not to be confused with “les ossuaires des catacombes de Paris”. It's places like these where they are stacking our bones today.

Don't like being squashed up against people in the metro? It's not so bad... one day you skull will come to rest on a bed of femurs from perfect strangers.

There are better things in Paris than the catacombes...

Space is short in Paris and if you don't expect your memory to live longer than 100 years, don't expect to rest in peace for any longer than that. If at the end of 100 years your family has not coughed up the rent you can expect to have your bones dug up in the dark of night, and wheeled away in The Bone Wagon by someone no doubt resembling Quasimodo.

One of the 10 U-boat pens at the La Rochelle U-boat bunker.

This was a really impressive place to explore, the scale is something to be seen. And with a concrete roof at around 7m thick it is virtually indestructible.

The Egyptians left the pyramids, the Romans left the Colosseum, we are going to leave a submarine bunker.

There is a report and more photos from this location on the exploration blog.

First Class Sprague

A beautifully maintained Sprague train from the early days of the Paris metro. This train is managed by the Parisian train nerd society ADEMAS who do some worthwhile tours of the Paris metro system if your interested in seeing this kind of thing in an above board kind of way. This is very train in which they used to run “Une nuit en métro” tours of the Paris metro system.

The train is kept well out of the public eye but with a bit of persistent checking of access, one day Seb and I were lucky enough to find ourselves sitting in first class... Although we did not get to hang around for long...

If train nerdery is your thing, dsankt has a post on various running stock we've run into during our adventures, there is even a bunch more photos of this Sprague.

I've only recently got back into shooting on film, in many ways I remember what I was disappointed about when I moved to digital. Shot on 35mm Fuji Reala 200.

The bottom of the blast furnace aux Forges de Clabecq. Abandoned steelworks are lots of fun kiddies, go explore them!

And that's it for Belgium!

I'd like to send a message to the security guards who ran around like headless chooks looking for me and qx in the most famous of Belgium's abandoned steelworks, les Forges de Clabecq.

We were well aware there were security patrolling the site, so maybe it was pushing things a bit climbing to the top of the furnace tower in broad daylight. But hey, I have to admit I do enjoy the rush of a good security chase.

qx: Do you want the bad news or the bad news...?
me: Ummm...
qx: There are three guys dressed in blue heading our way...
me: Ok...
qx: You wanna leave?
me: Probably a good idea.

So, to that security guard and your dopey dog, if only you know how close to catching us... if you had only looked left. :)

PS: Fuck it is easy to make things look arty in B&W!
